The Surfside Building Collapse
On Thursday, June 24, 2021, a 12-story residential building in Surfside collapsed. The early-morning building collapse destroyed nearly half of the complex’s units and left 51 people missing in the rubble. In the immediate moments after the incident, two people were rescued from the debris and one person was confirmed dead.
As of this writing, it remains unknown what caused the building to collapse, and officials are still working through the rubble to find survivors and identify victims. While the investigation is ongoing, one report has revealed that the high rise was inspected and labeled as unstable over a year ago by a researcher at Florida International University.
The Champlain Towers South were built in 1981 on reclaimed wetlands. The researchers noted that the building had sunk about 2 millimeters a year during the 1990s and that the sinking could have worsened or slowed since then.
That researcher now speculates that the collapse could have caused the building collapse near Miami.
“It was a byproduct of analyzing the data. We saw this building had some kind of unusual movement,” Shimon Wdownski, professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at the Florida International University said to reporters. However, officials have pointed out that investigators need finish their work before conclusions about the cause are made.
