The Best Lawyers® Methodology
Best Lawyers begins with a nationwide nomination process. Nominees are organized by area and practice, and previous honorees are then tasked with offering a frank evaluation of candidates in their region and practice area. These reviews are strictly confidential, and reviewers cannot select which attorneys they review.
Then, all the nominees are put on a ballot for a general vote among current Best Lawyers selectees. Each nominee receives a score of 1–5 by voters, based on how likely the voter would refer a case to that lawyer. For voters unfamiliar with an attorney's work, they can mark "Do Not Know" so as not to skew the score.
Finally, Best Lawyers research staff will verify each attorney's standing with their local or state bar association. This ensures that lawyers meet a high ethical standard before being included. Once that's verified, attorneys are awarded inclusion based on the practice areas for which they scored high. The resulting list is a roster of lawyers practicing at the highest level, advocates who are proven to be a "lawyer's lawyer."
